Wants and Needs was designed to view your life in three categories: Wants, Needs, and Thanks. But what are Wants, Needs, and Thanks?
Webster dictionary defines want as ” to desire or wish for (something).” Wants can be anything from wanting to learn a new language to wanting to spend more time with family. But wanting too much can lead to greed and ungratefulness. On the other hand, not wanting enough can leave us in unhappy places in our lives. Not all Wants are bad. It’s good to want to advance at work or better yourself in any way. That’s why it’s important to find balance and view your Wants in perspective with your Needs and Thanks.
Webster defines needs as “of necessity.” Needs are things we can’t live without. Everyone’s necessities are different. But we all have things we need.
Obviously, we all need food and water to live. But what are your personal needs? Eating healthier and exercising more might be a need for some people. If you’re religious, one of your needs could be spending more time reading your Bible or in prayer (Strengthen Your Faith with Wants and Needs). Spending more time with family can be a need, too. You can also make other people’s Needs your own. For example, maybe your kids need help with homework or a family member needs a phone call to check up on them.
Some of us will have more Needs than others. But if your Needs are high compared to your Wants and Thanks, maybe some of those Needs aren’t necessities.
Here’s how Webster defines Thanks: a good feeling that you have towards someone who has helped you, given something to you, etc. Thanks = gratitude. If you’ve ever had a friend or family member sacrifice their time, energy, or money to help you with a favor, you know this feeling. Thanks can be gratitude for huge blessings in your life or small events throughout the day. You might be grateful for a good grade in school, a beautiful sunset, new bed sheets, or a phone call from an old friend. We can be grateful for anything and everything. Big and small.
Unlike your Wants and your Needs, Thanks should be the list that never stops growing. You can never be too thankful. Studies have even shown gratitude to increase happiness and improve health.
